3 Trades That Clear $100K Before A College Degree Breaks Even

A college freshman starting this fall graduates in 2030 with about $50,000 in debt and walks into a job market where the median bachelor's starting salary sits closer to $60,000, not the $68,000 headline number that gets thrown around.

An 18 year old who starts an apprenticeship this fall graduates the same year. No debt. A paycheck from day one. And in at least three trades, a real shot at six figures before that diploma even gets framed.

1. Elevator Mechanic

BLS puts the median at $106,580 a year, the only trade in the country with a six figure median wage. The path in is a 4 to 5 year NEIEP apprenticeship, and you're paid the entire time. Roughly 2,000 openings a year, mostly from retirements, because a big chunk of the current workforce is aging out.

2. Power Lineman

BLS median sits at $98,520. The apprenticeship runs 4 years through an IBEW JATC program. Storm work and overtime push most journeymen past six figures within their first year or two out of the program. Grid modernization and EV charging buildout have this trade growing 11% through 2032, faster than almost any other occupation.

3. Data Center Electrician

The official BLS median for electricians is $92,350, but that number is measuring the wrong job. Electricians working data center builds are landing $87,000 to $150,000+ in hot markets according to multiple 2026 industry pay surveys, because the AI buildout needs more hands than the trade currently has. Same 4 to 5 year apprenticeship. Same zero debt.
